Inks containing carbon black have also been attested since the 3rd century BC. Pliny lists carbon black and gum arabic as ingredients. Inks containing soot do not fade, but they do run on parchment when wet.
Take soot from the fireplace and stir it with water or white wine and let it boil. Add egg white until you have good adhesion. Make only a little of it, as it spoils easily.
