And they did it again: HP´s latest OfficeJet Pro firmware update is preventing the usage of alternative or refilled HP 953 cartridges. The automatic firmware update setting is a default setting in the current HP OfficeJet series. The already installed cartridges can be used untill they are empty. After the replacement the blocking procedure comes in place. Therefore the result of the firmware version 1910 and 1912 is delayed until the next cartridge change. The printer error messages are "Cartridge error - defekt cartridge", "Remove and reinstall indicated cartridge" "Cartridge not intended for the use in this printer".

In the beginning of 2016 HP already released a firmware that prohibited the usage of recycled cartridges months later. The negative reactions throughout all media had such an impact that HP had to release a new version that enabeled using these cartridges again. It is uncertain that HP will repeat this behaviour this time.

On the HP support and download section the version of the current firmware is stated as 1910 or 1912.

How to view your printers firmware verion:
Swipe downwards on your printer display, press Info, scroll to the bottom line
April firmware Version: EDWINXPP1N002.1912A.00 or MCP2CN1910AR.

Deactivating auto firmware updates on the printer:
Press the gear symbol (Setup), click "Printer Maintenance", "Update the Printer", "Printer update options" select "Do not check"
