Sublimation inks are used to apply images to a wide variety of textiles and objects. In the first step of thermal transfer printing, the ink is printed onto a special sublimation paper using a suitable printer or plotter. The user then places the surface of the paper on the corresponding textile or polyester-coated object. A hot press is then used to press the sublimation paper onto the textile or object. Home users also use a simple iron for this. During hot pressing, the dye of the sublimation ink evaporates (sublimates) into the fabric or polyester surface, where it forms a bond on a molecular level. Objects and textiles should be coated with polyester so that the sublimation ink can adhere well.
