Refill instructions HP 305, 305 XL colour
Preparation for filling:
To fill the HP 305, 305 XL cartridge you will need the following:
- an absorbent work surface
- a cutter knife or spatula
- 3 refill syringes with needles
- ink (305 2ml each, 305 XL 4ml each)
Prepare your workplace in such a way that no permanent ink contamination can occur. It is best to place kitchen paper on an ink-repellent work surface (place mat).
Remove the HP 305, 305 XL colour cartridge from your printer and place it on the table in front of you. Take the cutter knife and carefully remove the label on the top of the cartridge (Figure 1). Set the label aside; it will be needed again after refilling.
Now you can see the filling holes of the cartridge. When filling the HP 305, 305 XL cartridge, you must distinguish whether you purchased your cartridge separately or have a starter cartridge. Starter cartridges are the cartridges that were included when you purchased your printer. These cartridges can differ in the arrangement of the ink chambers. In figure 2 you can see the arrangement of the ink chambers of a purchased cartridge; in figure 3 you can see the arrangement of the ink chambers of a starter cartridge.
If you are not sure which ink to put where, you can try it out beforehand. Take a cannula, for example, and insert it into the respective chamber. When you pull out the needle, you can see which ink is in it.

Filling the HP 305, 305 XL:
Take the refill syringe and put the needle on the syringe. Draw up the recommended amount of ink.
With the refill syringe drawn on, poke the inside of the HP 305, 305 XL colour cartridge (figure 3). You will feel a small resistance; this comes from the sponge in the cartridge body. If you insert the needle at a slight angle, you will reach the filter screen in the cartridge after 32mm. You must not pierce this filter sieve, otherwise the ink will run out of the cartridge unhindered. Insert the needle no more than 3cm into the cartridge.
Now fill the ink slowly. If some ink comes out of the top, remove some ink again. One ink chamber is now filled. Repeat the process for the other two colour chambers.
After filling:
To prevent a vacuum from forming in the cartridge, there is a kind of labyrinth system on the cartridge lid. This system ensures ventilation while you are printing something with the cartridge.
The ventilation opening (circle 1) marked in figure 5 is connected to the end of the channel system (circle 2). It is through this duct system that the pressure is equalised.
Since the cartridge has three different ink chambers, there are a total of three channel systems with three ends (circle 2, 3 and 4). These endings must not be taped over when you stick the label back on the cartridge (picture 6). Now you can put your cartridge back into the printer.
Special features of the HP 305, 305 XL:
It cannot be ruled out that after inserting the refilled cartridge your printer displays an error message that the ink cartridge is empty. In this case, ignore this message and your printer will continue printing. However, it will continue to print without a level indicator, because your printer knows this cartridge by its serial number and has counted the ink level empty.
If it is not possible to ignore this message and get the printer to work, the only option is to replace the cartridge with another filled one or with a new HP cartridge, as there is currently no reset method as with older HP cartridges.
Tip: Printers usually remember the last three cartridges by their serial number. If you have several cartridges of the same type available, try to get one of the other cartridges to work or insert these cartridges one after the other into your machine until, for example, the cartridge you filled last can be reinserted and recognised as the fourth. This way your printer will gradually overwrite the last three stored serial numbers.
However, we cannot give any functional guarantee for the methods described above.
